Slashed
The third dimension in canvas
2021
Slashed is a generative artwork inspired by Lucio Fontana’s renowned series Concetto Spaziale (Spatial Concept), where Fontana famously pierced and slashed his canvases to explore the intersection between two-dimensional surfaces and the infinite space beyond. His works broke traditional boundaries by adding depth and dimensionality to flat canvases, creating an almost sculptural presence within a painting.
In slashed, the challenge was to evoke a similar sense of depth on a digital, two-dimensional plane. While Fontana physically cut into his canvases, bringing a tangible sense of space and materiality, recreating this effect in code required carefully crafted algorithms to simulate the illusion of depth. The aim was to transform a flat digital canvas into a space that feels like it has been torn open, achieving a sensation of physicality and depth through generative techniques.
This piece explores how digital art can mirror the physical manipulation of surfaces, pushing the boundaries of a two-dimensional screen much like Fontana did with his canvases. It draws from more than the visual inspiration of Fontana’s work—it attempts to recreate, through code, the emotional and conceptual impact of piercing through space.
